2021 is over, and we can now look back on the memories we made. Another thing we can look back on is the books we read. The New York Times Bestselling List is commonly known for being the preeminent book list. Reese Witherspoon, a famous actress, has a book club and her own store, where she makes recommendations as well. There is also an app called Goodreads, where people can keep track of books they read, what their friends read, and get recommendations from all over the world. All three of these places have a “best books” list, and below, two of them will be listed.
The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave was Reese Witherspoon’s pick in May and won the Goodreads Choice Awards for the “Mystery & Thriller” category. This story is about the disappearance of Owen Michaels, who was the husband of Hannah and the father of Bailey. After leaving with no trace because of a problem at work, he leaves notes for Hannah and Bailey, along with a mysterious duffel bag full of money. His note to his wife says one thing: “Protect her.”. Through Hannah’s perspective, readers get to see the story unfold, revealing family drama, military and FBI involvement, and suspense. In one of Dave’s best works, The Last Thing He Told Me provides suspense and unexpected twists, with an ending that is just as shocking as the beginning.
Another book that was a big hit in 2021 was New York Times Bestselling Author, Adam Silvera’s, They Both Die at the End. Although this book was published in 2017, social media has been discussing this book all year, earning it #1 on the New York Times list for the “Best Young Adult Paperback Books” for one year in March, though it has been on the list for a total of seventeen months. This young adult novel is a story about two young boys who have never met, both getting a call that they were going to die that day. After meeting on an app, they decide to spend their End Day together. In just a day, they learn what it means to truly live life. All high school students need to read this book because it is such a beautiful story of how friendship can come in unexpected places. One freshman student stated that “They Both Die at the End is an inviting book that brings you to the lives of two young men who found out their lives are ending. We get to watch their lives unfold, and get to see if the name of the title comes into play.”
Overall, these two books are amazing and can really influence high school students in more ways than one.
