Advice Column #1

Updated: Oct 30, 2019

I have two best friends. One of them is a boy and one of them is a girl. They have recently become a couple and now I’m stuck third-wheeling. What do I do?

I would talk to both of them and express how you are feeling. It’s really hard for anything to change if they don’t know that you are feeling this way. When talking to them, be direct and clear with how you want things to change.

I feel so alone and don’t know where to turn. I don’t want to burden my friends with my problems. What should I do?

Talk to your friends. If they truly care about you, you will not be a burden of any kind. If you strongly believe you will burden them, talk to a trusted adult. This could mean a parent, neighbor, other family member, or even a favorite teacher. Don’t keep everything bottled up because it will only get worse from there. Be open with the people that love you and care about you the most. And remember, you are not alone.

Is it weird that I’m a junior and haven’t been kissed?

No! You shouldn’t feel pressured to do anything just because of how old you are and how many people around you are doing that thing. It is up to you when, how, why, and whom you will share that first kiss with. Don’t let your friends or anyone pressure you into it and this goes for more than just kissing.

I suspect my boyfriend is cheating on me. Some people have told me he is texting another girl. I know his phone passcode. Should I check for the messages or confront him?

If you’re unsure, you could look for the messages before accusing him of anything. If you don’t feel like going through the messages right away, you could talk to him and tell him that you’ve heard something from a few people and you just want to know if it’s true. If he has nothing to hide, he will hand you his phone. Go with your gut and do what’s best for you. If you do find out that he is cheating on you and talking to another girl, don’t just stay with him because you love him. Don’t waste your feelings on someone who disregards them.
